Maple Syrup in Coffee: How to Make the Perfect Maple Latte

If you’ve never tried maple syrup in coffee, now is a good time to start.

The mornings are getting cooler, autumn is creeping in and suddenly an iced drink in the sunshine is starting to lose out to something warm, frothy and comforting.

Enter the maple latte.

Pure maple syrup dissolves easily into both hot and cold coffee and brings more than sweetness. Depending on the maple syrup you choose, you’ll also get caramel, toffee and deeper maple notes that pair naturally with the roasted flavours in coffee.

You don’t need specialist coffee syrups or equipment, either. A bottle of pure maple syrup, your usual coffee and milk are enough to get started.

Which maple syrup is best for coffee?

Technically, you can use any pure maple syrup in coffee. But if you want the maple flavour to stand up against espresso, we’d reach for something with a little more depth.

Dark maple syrup is particularly good in coffee. Its stronger, robust maple flavour complements espresso, chocolate and warming spices.

If you prefer just a hint of maple sweetness rather than a pronounced maple flavour, try First Tapped.

Cinnamon maple latte

Add a pinch of ground cinnamon to your coffee before adding the milk.

Top with another dusting of cinnamon and a tiny drizzle of maple syrup for a coffee that tastes like autumn without requiring half the contents of your spice cupboard.

Pumpkin spice maple latte

Pumpkin spice season has officially arrived.

Add a spoonful of pumpkin purée and a pinch of cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg to your coffee and maple syrup. Stir well before adding hot frothed milk.

The maple syrup works particularly well here because its caramel flavour complements the warming spices.

Coffee. Chocolate. Maple.

It’s difficult to go too far wrong.

Stir a teaspoon of cocoa powder into your hot espresso with the maple syrup, then add steamed milk.

Dark maple syrup works especially well here because its more robust flavour isn’t lost against the chocolate and coffee.

Can you use maple syrup instead of sugar in coffee?

Yes.

If you normally add sugar to your coffee, you can use maple syrup instead. Because it’s liquid, it mixes straight into the drink, particularly useful in iced coffee where granulated sugar can struggle to dissolve.

Simple.
